Physical Assessment HR UTHS

POLICY OVERVIEW

The University of Texas Health Science at Houston (UTHSC-H) requires that all employees receive a pre-employment tuberculosis (TB) screening. In addition, employees whose jobs have been classified as being "at risk", whose professional licensure includes physical requirements for continued accreditation, and/or who must comply with federal and state laws regarding physicals will need to complete a pre-employment physical. The assessments will be conducted by UT Health Services (UTHS).

PROCEDURE

I. Health Assessment as a Pre-condition of Employment

Human Resources will coordinate and schedule the initial appointment for new employees at UTHS. The only health-related requirement for all new employees will be the administration of tuberculosis (TB) screening, including chest x-rays for all positive reactors. New employees whose jobs have been classified as being at risk will undergo a pre-employment physical that will take into account the demands of the individual job description. Successful passage of the physical assessment and/or TB screening is required for employment.

II. Health Maintenance Examinations

As part of the health maintenance program, employees whose jobs have been classified as being at risk may be required to undergo a periodic health examination at no cost to the employee. The frequency with which these assessments are offered ranges between one and three years, depending on such factors as the employee's job classification and the findings of previous health assessments. The health evaluation includes an array of routine procedures, such as a complete history and physical exam, immunizations, vision and hearing tests, TB skin testing, and urinalysis. The employee will receive all results of the assessment and will be scheduled for a future appointment.
