Guidelines for Faculty Involvement in Evaluating Administrators

UT-Houston faculty will be involved in the regular, periodic evaluation of the leadership of administrators. Leadership Reviews will be conducted in addition to annual performance evaluations by the immediate superior of each incumbent; annual performance evaluations are not subject to the following guidelines. Refer to the description of "Leadership Reviews of Administrators" in the Background and Organization section of the Handbook of Operating Procedures, page I-13 for policy information relating to these guidelines. These guidelines will evolve as processes become more defined.

  1. Administrators will undergo a leadership review at least once every five years.
  2. Each organizational unit may develop and implement its own internal process of review, based upon its individual needs. Processes developed by individual organizational units will be consistent in intent and philosophy with the institutional-level process and with each other.
  3. Each leadership review process will provide an opportunity for input from all faculty members in the academic unit(s) and/or departments reporting to and or affected directly by the decisions of the administrator being evaluated.
  4. In the evaluation of institutional leaders (e.g., Executive Vice Presidents), the University Senate, or other representative faculty body will be consulted in the development of the leadership review process. In the evaluation of school leaders (e.g., Deans), the faculty governance organization in that school will be consulted in the development of the leadership review process.
  5. A summary of the faculty input into the review process will constitute a significant component of the evaluation report and should be provided to the administrator under review and to the administrator's supervisor. Copies of all reviews will be placed in the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  6. At the conclusion of the review, the immediate superior of the administrator under review will communicate appropriate information from the review to the faculty members in the affected units.
